Installing renewables

solar panelOne of the best ways to reduce your carbon emissions is to convert your heating to a wood fired system.  Wood is a carbon neutral fuel; it only emits as much carbon when burnt as it took in whilst growing.  An efficient wood fuelled boiler can cater for all your home’s heating and hot water requirements.

Although this is not a cheap option it is possible to save around 8tonnes of CO2 per year.  Changing to a wood fuelled boiler for heating and hot water, including installation and all parts could cost anything between £6,000 and £12,000.

Installing a Domestic Solar Water Heating System will save around 350Kg of CO2 per year.  It is likely to cost in the region of £3,500 – £5,000 depending on what kind of system is installed.  Once installed, there are no running costs and the systems will only need servicing once every 3-5 years.

How about getting your heat from the ground.  Ground Source Heat Pumps take latent heat from the earth and pump it around your home, usually via underfloor heating.  This is quite a disruptive process for existing homes, but has very high efficiency rates and a long life span.
