Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery in new homes report

Published in July 2013, Zero Carbon Hub’s Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery in new homes report points up some potential problems that installers must learn to avoid:

  • inadequate ventilation for the number of occupants
  • noise from the system
  • polluted inbound air
  • hard to access units
  • dust and dirt collecting in ductwork
  • poor user understanding of system
  • poor access to (less than optimum) controls

The report concludes that the government should step in to drive up the commissioning and installation standards for mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems in UK homes.

24,000 MVHR fan units were installed in UK homes in 2012, but only a limited sample have been monitored.
