Personal story:

We were looking for a home in the town centre, we knew the lady who was selling the home and she wanted it to remain a family home.

Motivations:

We want to create a modern living environment in this old Victorian house. It was cold, hard to heat and in a poor state of repair when we bought it. At the same time as modernising it we’re taking the opportunity to make it a more energy efficient.

Property background:

It was a boarding house at one time. The previous tenants moved, in 1948 and lived there for 60 years.

Key changes made:

This refurbishment is very much a work in progress. Internal wall insulation, floor and loft insulation and energy efficient windows have been installed along with an efficient gas boiler and wood stove.

Measures installed in detail:

  • Energy efficient condensing boiler installed with controls
  • Efficient Double glazing installed throughout
  • Floor insulation installed on ground floor
  • Kingspan Kooltherm K17 / K18 insulated dry lining
system used to internally insulate external walls on three sides.  Rigid phenolic insulant 0.020 W/M.K (45mm)
  • Loft insulation topped up to 270mm from minimal 50mm
  • Energy saving lightbulbs fitted throughout
  • Wood stove installed
