Personal story:

We moved here from New Bradwell in November 2006, we wanted a bigger house for raising children. Our first child was born in January 2007. My husband commutes to London so Wolverton was an ideal place to live. We love living here and don’t plan to move.


I want to future proof our home against rising fuel prices. I want to do something towards lowering carbon emissions. Also we will be warmer and cosier in our home in winter time.

Property background:

From speaking to our neighbour (who is now 90 years old and has lived in her house since she was 14) and looking at documents, we are the third set of occupants of the house. Our children are the first to live here.

Key changes made:

We have now had internal wall insulation fitted on the inside of all external walls giving the house effective 100% insulation cover. The insulation has been installed behind the units in the kitchen and downstairs WC  which is well beyond what most households might do as it meant removing the units and the boiler then reinstalling them. You can normally get a grant provided at least 50% of the external walls get insulated in the process.

  • Valiant gas boiler installed (Ecotec Pro)
  • Underfloor insulation installed on ground floor
  • Internal wall insulation. Kingspan Kooltherm K17 / K18 insulated dry lining system used to internally insulate external walls on three sides.  Rigid phenolic insulant 0.020 W/M.K (45mm)
  • Topped up loft to 250mm. Insulated loft boards installed
  • Energy saving lightbulbs. LEDs installed
  • Back double door UPVC replacement. French doors replaced with wooden double glazed draught proofed. Partial secondary glazing  (to original sash windows at front). Replaced one with double glazed draught proofed window
  • A rated fridge/freezer A rated oven. A++rated tumble dryer
  • Kitchen tap water saving
Benefits of work carried out:

The coldest part of house – ground floor toilet, is now really warm. The arctic wind has gone and the whole house feels toasty on a cold evening even with just 3 radiators on.

Favourite feature:

The house is in lovely condition with lots of original features. We feel like custodians of this lovely house and want to preserve it for the future.
